The LYC Sailing Committee would like to introduce our new Sailing Director for 2017
As a student at Northern Michigan University she sails on Lake Superior!
A junior on the Dean’s list, majoring in Elementary Education-Integrated Science. Working toward her Spanish minor, she studied abroad in Spain last year.
She has taught sailing at the Community Sailing School at Pistakee in Illinois for 5 summers starting as assistant instructor. She worked to build a program for the last 5 years, ending her time at CSS@Pistakee taking on the Director position for summer 2016. With a staff of 8 she created curriculum for beginners, adventure sailing, including US Sailing STEM program and enabling kids to sail in their first regattas!
Cortney’s US Sailing Certification includes; Level I and II Instructors, One Day Race Management, STEM Reach. Cortney sails competitively on the NMU collegiate team and will be the Commodore her Senior year. She also sails big boats out of Columbia YC on Lake Michigan on various class of boats. Skipper’s CScows at the Pistakee Yacht Club and completed her first Race to Mackinaw, NOOD and Queens Cup in 2016 on J105s. She was a 2016 Lead Volunteer for the very first America's Cup Race held in Chicago. She volunteered with Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Program for disabled sailors before her summer of big boat sailing. Cortney learned to sail at 6 on Pistakee Bay. She has thrived as she accepted more responsibility and grew from sailing student to sailing instructor to Director.
In 2014 Cortney earned her Girl Scout Gold award by launching “Cortney’s Sailing Corner.” With the scholarship program going into its 4th year many kids have experienced the challenge to learn to sail whom normally may never had the opportunity. These scholarship students represent Cortney’s continued belief that sailing builds self-confidence and more capable individuals. Cortney is currently the MCSA Special Interests chair and is working on a Women’s Sailing Clinic, sponsored by the Midwest College Sailing Association and Harken in April.
